¿What is Gamma Knife Radiosurgery?
Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a unique method by which 192 beams of cobalt-60 radiation are administered to treat conditions affecting the brain, other structures of the head and upper neck. It does not use a scalpel, instead it is a very effective, non-invasive treatment that does not require any surgical incisions.
Gamma Knife is the most widely accepted and widely used radiosurgery treatment in the world. More than one million patients have been treated with Gamma Knife.
It is an extraordinary instrument that allows reaching lesions located very deep in the brain, located in areas considered critical for the functions they perform, and which are considered inaccessible in traditional open surgery, with a high degree of precision that allows respecting the adjacent healthy areas of the one being treated.
The rays do not damage the cells or tissues through which they pass, they are “silent”; it is only when they meet the target (treatment target) that they are powerful enough to destroy the tumor or the desired area.
Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Advantages
The precision of Gamma Knife radiosurgery allows the use of a high dose of radiation focused on a very specific, well-delimited lesion of relatively small volume, located deep in the head. This makes it possible to effectively treat the lesion by reducing it, eliminating it or in any case radically stopping its growth. This is usually achieved in a single treatment.
- * It does not require any surgical incision. It does not carry the risks of open surgery such as bleeding and infection.
- * It is a painless procedure. It does not require general anesthesia.
- * It is an outpatient, minimally invasive treatment.
- * Fewer side effects. Occasionally nausea, headache or hair loss may occur.
- * The patient can resume normal activities the same day.
Leksell Gamma Knife Icon
The Gamma Knife ICON has an integrated imaging system for greater control and precision during treatment. It is more precise with an accuracy of 0.015 mm = 15 micrometers, optimized and measured on our equipment. This makes it safer and more effective for our patients, especially in lesions close to critical structures.
This new equipment uses both the stereotactic frame and the thermoplastic mask which allows us to treat more pathologies, especially oncological diseases.
We are proud to have in our Santo Domingo center the second Gamma Knife ICON installed in Latin America.
Benefits of Gamma Knife ICON
